Southwestern Landfill Environmental Assessment

Public Events

Public events are just one way Walker engages with community members on the Southwestern Landfill Environmental Assessment (EA). At public events, participants can learn about project details, key milestones of the EA process, and meet with Walker project team members. This is also a great way for members of the public to ask questions, provide input and make recommendations on the project.

2020 Public Events- Draft Environmental Assessment

Design & Mitigation Workshop - Now Closed

The Design & Mitigation Workshop was available from Monday, August 31 - Friday, September 11

This is a self-directed online workshop inviting you to share your thoughts and provide input on key Design and Mitigation features of the proposed Southwestern Landfill as part of consultation on the Draft Environmental Assessment. All input received through the workshop will be considered as part of the Final Environmental Assessment.

  • Landfill Design is the plan followed to physically construct a facility that is safe and protective of the environment. Some examples include a landfill liner to protect groundwater or a landfill gas collection system to protect air quality.
  • Mitigation is a term used to describe ways to prevent potential effects. Some examples of mitigation are paving an internal road to further minimize dust or building a berm and planting trees to further minimize noise impacts.

Have a question before or during the Online Workshop?

Walker representatives are available and committed to answering all questions by phone 1.855.392.5537 or email info@walkerea.com.

Online Open House held June 17, 2020 – Follow-up Materials

On Wednesday, June 17, Walker hosted the first virtual public consultation event in the form of an Online Open House. During this event Walker presented the Key Findings of the Draft EA, followed by a Question and Answer period where members of the public could ask questions and receive answers in real-time.

The following materials include the Video Recording of the event, and a Questions & Answers Document where Walker has provided written answers to all questions received in advance as well as all questions received during the Online Open House event.

Previous Public Events

Since 2012, Walker has hosted 8 public events on the Southwestern Landfill. During the Terms of Reference (TOR) phase, we hosted 3 events and during the EA phase, we have hosted 5 events to-date. These events took place at key milestones as committed to during the ToR. The figure below summarizes the consultation milestones during the EA:
