Working to keep seagulls and other pests away from our landfills.

When you think of landfills, do you think of seagulls circling above? You may be surprised to learn about the many things landfills can do to deter birds and other pests!

Here are some things we do to keep birds and pests away from our landfill in Niagara Falls, Ontario:

  • Full-time wildlife control employees monitor the landfill for birds and other pests
  • A professional falconer uses birds of prey (like hawks and falcons) to deter seagulls and other birds from visiting the landfill. Other techniques like pyrotechnics (firecrackers) can also be used in some cases.
  • Only a small area of the landfill is used each day (called the working face)
  • The waste is covered at the end of each day, typically with soil (called daily cover)
